Hello hello!

Welcome to my slice of the internet. I’m a freelance culture journalist, writer and producer based in New York City. And I love stories at the intersection of identity, politics and culture.

I came up in media through The Atlantic’s fellowship writing for their politics and culture sections in D.C. Once I took the hint that culture journalism was my jam, I became a Culture Staff Writer at VICE. As a culture journalist, I care most about movies, TV, albums or fashion movements that reflect real-life political issues or offer society-leading perspectives on Blackness, womanhood, and/or queerness.

Post-VICE I got back into podcasting as a producer at Pineapple Street Media. At Pineapple, I sold my first professional podcast idea “Insecure Interludes” to HBO Max (an innovative podcast-playlist hybrid show all about the cultural impact of Insecure’s soundtrack). I’ve also lead-produced narrative series like WHYY’s March On, and one-off audio documentaries like one I reported and hosted for The New Yorker Radio Hour about Tulsa’s rap movement. And the next chapter of the journey has been developing larger projects for film and TV.

In conversation with New Yorker culture writer Vinson Cunningham, I shared tape from my longer KCRW audio documentary and told the story of a rap movement in Tulsa that’s grappling with the city’s Black Wall Street Massacre on its 100th anniversary.

Lead-produced this limited narrative series for Philly’s NPR affiliate WHYY about the queeny drama among new and old Pride organizers, and the big picture about what the fallouts mean for the future of Pride.

Insecure Interludes

The first original podcast idea that I pitched and sold from my culture reporting, this HBO Max show is about the cultural impact of Insecure’s soundtrack. Featuring my interviews with Issa Rae, Jay Ellis and artists like Victoria Monet and Vince Staples, it also has an innovative playlist format where 5-minute “interlude” interviews are placed between the songs that artists and show creators are referencing. The goal was to expand on the popular trend of musicians’ storytelling interludes that push culture conversations on their albums (like Jazmine Sullivan’s Heaux Tales and Blood Orange’s Negro Swan).

I lead-produced the second season of Netflix’s Black culture podcast Okay, Now Listen hosted by Sylvia Obell and Scottie Beam. And the highlight of the season was a live recording (and performance!) with R&B queen Jazmine Sullivan just before her tickets cost an arm and a leg. The good old days!

The New Black Wall Street

“The New Black Wall Street” is a narrative documentary I reported, produced and narrated for KCRW’s “Here Be Monsters” podcast about a community of rappers in Tulsa Oklahoma who are commemorating the 1921 Tulsa race massacre. The 45 minute doc chronicles their story of taking over the mansion house of a dead KKK member who helped found the city, turning it into the headquarters of a new Hip Hop movement that’s rebuilding Black Wall Street.

The Secret Lives of Black Women

I lead produced the third season of this interview show from the Stitcher podcasting company. The show—hosted by TV/film producers Charla Lauriston and Lauren Domino—delved into the behind-the-scenes struggles and triumphs of Black womanhood with guests like Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief Lindsay Peoples Wagner.

Buzzfeed's Impeachment Today

I was one of the editors on this daily podcast from Buzzfeed hosted by Hayes Brown, which gave listeners an upbeat entertaining debrief on the latest twists and turns in Trump’s impeachment trial.
